How much does SEO cost in the UK, and what should the money buy?
Most SEO is sold as a monthly retainer, and the price depends far more on what that retainer actually does than on who sells it. The largest published survey of SEO providers, Ahrefs' poll of 439 of them, found that 78.2% charge a monthly retainer, that the most common band is $501 to $1,000 a month, and that the average is $2,917, pulled upwards by agencies.
Our own prices are published rather than quoted on a call: an SEO audit normally £495 and free for a limited time, local SEO from £695 a month, and a full search programme from £995 a month, with no minimum term.
What does the survey data actually say?
There is very little real data on SEO pricing, and a great deal of agency marketing presented as data. The one large survey worth reading is Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey, which polled 439 SEO providers and last updated its figures in August 2024. It is international and in US dollars, so treat it as a shape rather than a UK price list.
The shape is clear enough. Retainers dominate: 78.2% of providers charge one. The most common band is $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4% of them. Averages by provider type run from $1,348.63 a month for freelancers to $3,209 for agencies and $3,250 for consultants, and the average hourly rate is $111.
The gap between the most common price and the average tells you most of what you need to know. A large number of providers work at the small business end, and a smaller number of agencies charge several times more for larger and more competitive work.
How is SEO sold?
A one-off audit or project. Somebody looks at the site properly and writes down what is wrong, in order. It is useful on its own when you have a developer who can make the fixes, and it is the right first step before any retainer. Across the UK market, audits run roughly £400 to £1,500 depending on the size of the site, in our own reading of published prices.
A monthly retainer. The work continues: pages written, the Google Business Profile kept up, links earned, technical problems fixed as they appear, and a report on what changed. This is how most SEO is bought, because search does not stay fixed.
Hourly consultancy. Advice by the hour, usually for a business with its own people doing the work. It is good value when your team can act on it, and expensive when they cannot.
What decides where your price lands?
How competitive the searches are. A plumber in a market town and a law firm in central London are both doing SEO, and they are not the same job. The more businesses competing for the same searches, the more work it takes to be one of the three that get the call.
Local or national. Local SEO works on a small set of searches in a defined area, and a lot of it is the Google Business Profile, reviews and a handful of service and location pages. National search means competing with everyone, and it needs more content and more earned links.
The state of the site. A site that cannot be crawled properly, loads slowly on a phone or has no page for the thing you sell will absorb budget before any of the ongoing work pays. That is what the audit is for.
How much gets written. Content is usually the largest single cost in a search programme, because a page worth ranking takes real time to research and write.
What should a monthly SEO fee actually buy?
A retainer is only as good as the list of things that happen every month, and you should be able to see that list before you sign. Ours is published, so use it as a benchmark. Local SEO from £695 a month covers the Google Business Profile managed properly, citations built and kept consistent, a review routine people actually follow, service and location pages written, LocalBusiness and Service schema, and a one-page monthly report of what changed.
The full search programme from £995 a month adds content written to target real demand, ongoing technical and performance work, digital PR and earned links that are never bought, and visibility in the answers written by ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity. Both run month to month, with 30 days' notice.
What are the warning signs, whatever the price?
Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." It also tells you to be wary of anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. Treat a ranking guarantee, bought links, or a twelve-month contract signed before any results as reasons to walk away.
Cheap SEO is not automatically bad. A package at one or two hundred pounds a month can be honest work for a small local business in a quiet market. It becomes expensive when it buys activity instead of outcomes: a monthly report full of numbers, and no new enquiries.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Only if the searches exist and a customer who finds you is worth enough to pay for the work several times over. Before paying anyone monthly, find out whether people search for what you sell where you sell it, whether you already appear, and what one extra enquiry a month is worth to you. If the numbers do not stack up, a better website or a properly set up Google Business Profile may be all you need.
How our SEO pricing works
Every engagement starts with an SEO audit, normally £495 and free for a limited time: a technical crawl and indexation check, a keyword and intent gap analysis, a Google Business Profile review, a comparison with three competitors, and a prioritised fix list with effort estimates, walked through on a thirty-minute call.
From there, local SEO starts at £695 a month and a full search programme at £995 a month, with no minimum term. AI search visibility is included rather than sold as an extra, and every price we charge is on the price list. If the real problem is the website rather than the search work, the numbers for that are in what a website costs in the UK.
Questions about SEO pricing
How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?
Most SEO is sold as a monthly retainer. Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers found the most common band was $501 to $1,000 a month, with an average of $2,917 pulled up by agencies. Our local SEO starts at £695 a month and a full search programme at £995 a month, both with no minimum term.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
Across the UK market, audits run roughly £400 to £1,500 depending on the size of the site, in our own reading of published prices. Ours is normally £495 and free for a limited time, and it ends in a prioritised fix list any developer can work from.
Can anyone guarantee a first-page ranking on Google?
No. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns against anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. A good provider tells you what they will do each month and how they will measure it, not where you will rank.
