You probably do not need a new website to rank. Here is how to tell.

Usually not. If a site is structurally sound and reasonably fast, fixing and extending what exists is cheaper, faster and less risky than rebuilding, and a rebuild carries a real chance of losing the visibility you already have.

There are three conditions where a rebuild genuinely is necessary. Everything else is a fix list.

Why you are being told otherwise

Because a rebuild is a bigger invoice than a fix list, and because it is easier to sell a fresh start than a diagnosis. That is not always cynical. A lot of people who build websites do not do search work, so a rebuild is genuinely the only thing they can offer.

It is worth noticing that the incentive runs one way, and asking whoever is advising you which of the three conditions below applies.

The four checks, in order

1. Is it indexed? Search site:yourdomain.co.uk. If your pages come back, indexing is not your problem and a rebuild will not help. If they do not, find out why before doing anything else, because that is one setting on most platforms.

2. Is there a page for the thing you want to rank for? Genuinely about it, not a paragraph on a page about six other things. Most sites that "cannot rank" simply have no page targeting the term. That is a writing job, not a rebuild.

3. Is it fast enough on a phone? Run it through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Slow is fixable on almost every platform. Only if the platform itself makes speed impossible does this become an argument for moving.

4. Can it support the pages you need? If you need a page per service per area and the platform lets you make pages, it can. If it physically cannot, that is condition three below.

The three conditions where a rebuild is right

The platform blocks indexation. Some site builders and some bespoke systems produce pages search engines cannot read properly, or cannot give you control of titles, canonicals and structure. If you cannot fix what needs fixing, you have to move.

The structure cannot carry the pages. A single-page site cannot rank for eleven services in four towns. Neither can a site whose navigation and URL structure were designed around a business you no longer run.

Performance is beyond rescue. Rare, and usually a platform problem rather than a content one. A theme with six page builders stacked on it can be past the point where fixing costs more than replacing.

What the honest alternative costs

A one-off audit and prioritised fix list is £495. It tells you what is wrong, in what order to fix it, and whether any of the three conditions apply. If it concludes you need a rebuild it will say so, and if it concludes you need nothing at all it will say that too.

Ongoing local search work is from £695 a month, and a full monthly programme is from £995. Against a rebuild at £1,495 upwards that has to re-earn the visibility you already have, the fix list is usually the better first purchase. The detail is on the SEO page.

If you do rebuild, protect what you have

The risk in a rebuild is not the design, it is the URLs. Every page that changes address needs a permanent redirect to the closest equivalent, not to the home page, and the baseline needs recording before anything moves so you can tell what happened.

How to do that without losing rankings is a whole subject in itself and is covered in redesigning without losing your rankings. The service, at from £1,495, is built around exactly that constraint.

The question underneath the question

Most people asking whether they need a new website are really asking why the phone is not ringing. Those are different problems, and the site is only sometimes the cause. If you are not visible for the things you sell, that is a search problem. If you are visible and nobody enquires, that is a conversion problem and a rebuild might genuinely help. Establish which before spending.

Questions about rebuilding versus fixing

Do I need a new website to improve my Google rankings?

Usually not. If the site is indexed, can support the pages you need and is reasonably fast, fixing and extending it is cheaper and lower risk. A rebuild is genuinely necessary only where the platform blocks indexation, the structure cannot carry the pages, or performance cannot be fixed.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

A one-off audit and prioritised fix list is £495. Ongoing local SEO is from £695 a month and a full monthly programme from £995. The audit is the right first purchase because it establishes whether the other two are worth buying.

Will a redesign lose my rankings?

It can, and the risk is in the URLs rather than the design. Every changed address needs a permanent redirect to its closest equivalent, and the position baseline should be recorded before anything moves so any drop can be diagnosed rather than guessed at.
