What technical buyers look for on a manufacturer's site, and where yours loses them

Capability, tolerance, materials, capacity, certifications and lead time. In that order, and in specifics rather than adjectives. A technical buyer is not being persuaded, they are filtering, and a site that cannot be filtered on is removed from the list early.
Most manufacturers lose them at the point where a spec sheet should be and is not.
How a technical buyer actually behaves
They arrive with a requirement already defined, often by a drawing. They are building a shortlist of suppliers who can plausibly do it, and they are looking for reasons to remove you, because removing suppliers is how a shortlist gets made.
They do not read your About page. They do not care that you are passionate about engineering. They want to know whether you can hold the tolerance in that material at that quantity, and whether you have the certification their own customer will ask about.
What they search, and why you are not there
In extremely specific language: a process, a material, a tolerance, a standard, a capacity. Five-axis machining in a named alloy. A specific welding standard. A finishing process for a particular substrate.
Almost no UK manufacturer has a page for any of it. The site has Services, About and Contact, and Services is one page listing capabilities as bullet points. There is nothing for a specific search to land on, so it lands on a directory instead, and the directory sells your enquiry to three competitors.
This is a content problem with an unusually clear solution: one page per capability, written in the buyer's vocabulary, with the numbers on it.
Publish the numbers
Machine list with sizes and axes. Working envelope. Tolerances you routinely hold, not the best you have ever achieved. Materials you work regularly and those you do not. Batch sizes from and to. Typical lead times, with an honest note about what changes them.
Manufacturers resist this, usually for one of two reasons: competitors will see it, or the buyer will disqualify us. Competitors already know, and being disqualified early by a buyer whose job you could not have done is a saving, not a loss.
Certifications and the sectors you supply
Name them properly, with numbers and dates. ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949, ISO 13485, welding and inspection standards, whatever applies. These are filter criteria and they are frequently the first thing checked.
Then name the industries you supply, because each carries its own compliance vocabulary and its own buyer: aerospace, rail, medical, food processing, defence. A page per sector, in that sector's language, does more than a general capability page ever will.
The spec sheet, and where the enquiry dies
The commonest failure. A buyer gets to the point of wanting a data sheet, a drawing, a material certificate or a tolerance table, and there is a contact form instead. They do not fill it in. They go to the supplier who published theirs.
Publish the documents. If some are genuinely commercially sensitive, publish the ones that are not and be clear about what is available on request. A gate on everything is a gate on nothing, because nobody passes it.
The quoting leak, which is the expensive one
Getting found produces enquiries, and in manufacturing the enquiry-to-quote step is where the money leaks. An estimator re-deriving the same numbers, a quote that takes four days because it queues behind production, and no structured follow-up once it has gone out.
Four days is often the whole difference. The buyer shortlisted three suppliers and is working through them in the order the quotes arrive.
