Web design & SEO · East Sussex
Based in East Sussex, working across the whole county.
The county we actually live in, which is why the coastal towns and the Weald get described here as they really behave rather than as a map suggests they should.
Werehouse Media is an independent web design and SEO studio based in East Sussex, covering Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Bexhill, Uckfield, Crowborough, Heathfield, Seaford, Newhaven, Battle, Rye, Hailsham and the villages between them, as well as Brighton and Hove. Design, copy, build, search work and the automation behind it all happen in one place. Websites start at £995, multi-page builds from £1,495, redesigns from £1,495, a one-off SEO audit and fix list is normally £495 and free for a limited time, and local SEO runs from £695 a month.
East Sussex splits into three quite different search markets: Brighton and Hove, which is genuinely contested; the coastal strip from Seaford through Eastbourne to Hastings, where demand is strongly seasonal and competition is light; and the Wealden towns inland, where a great many established businesses still have no site worth the name. Outside the city, a properly structured site and a correctly configured Google Business Profile will frequently outrank far older competitors within a few months.
The market here
Three markets in one county, and they behave nothing alike.
Brighton and Hove is a hard market and it is fair to say so on a page trying to sell you something. It has one of the densest concentrations of digital and creative firms in the country, and the obvious search terms are contested by people who know exactly what they are doing. If you are in the city, the honest route in is search rather than design: the design side is where everyone is shouting, and the search side is meaningfully more open for the same audience. There is a Brighton page that goes into it.
The coastal strip (Seaford, Newhaven, Eastbourne, Pevensey, Bexhill, Hastings, St Leonards and Rye) runs on a different clock. Demand swings hard with the season and with the weather, and search interest moves two to three months ahead of the money. Work published in March is what pays in July, which is the single most useful thing to understand about marketing a business here. Eastbourne and Bexhill also carry an older resident profile than most of England, which changes what a website has to do: larger type, a phone number that is genuinely easy to find, and no assumption that the visitor will fill in a form at eleven at night.
The Weald (Uckfield, Crowborough, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row, Battle, Hailsham) is where the clearest opportunity sits. Established trades, agricultural and equestrian businesses, professional firms and independent retailers, many with a site somebody built in 2014 or a Google Business Profile nobody has touched since it was created. The bar is low and clearing it is not expensive. This is also where the rural broadband reality bites: a heavy, image-stuffed site performs badly for exactly the customers a Wealden business most wants to reach.
One practical consequence of being based here rather than covering here: for Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Haywards Heath and the mid-Sussex corridor, meeting in person is genuinely straightforward rather than a thing that gets promised and then does not happen.
Who we work with in East Sussex
Four kinds of business, four different jobs.
01
Trades and rural services
Heating, electrical, groundworks, tree surgery, agricultural and equestrian services.
A real page for each service and each town, the right Google primary category and a service area drawn to where the vans actually go. The highest-return work available to an East Sussex trade, and the version written out in full is on the trades page.
02
Coastal, tourism and hospitality
Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Camber and the seafront towns.
Content and profile work in place months before the season rather than during it, plus booking and enquiry routes that hold up when demand spikes over a bank holiday weekend.
03
Clinics and private practice
Dental, veterinary, physiotherapy, audiology and private healthcare.
A page per treatment, published fees where the regulator permits, and a phone that gets answered when reception is with a patient. See dental practices.
04
Independent retail and makers
Lewes, Rye, Battle and the market towns.
A site that sells the thing properly, gives the photography room to work, and does not fall over on a phone in a shop doorway with one bar of signal.
The search reality
What ranking in East Sussex actually takes
| Factor | How it works in East Sussex | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Competition level | Sharply split. Brighton and Hove is genuinely hard. Everywhere from Lewes eastwards and inland is comparatively open. | Outside the city, the basics done properly will usually do it. Inside it, lead with search rather than with a rebuild. |
| Seasonality | Coastal demand swings hard. Search interest moves two to three months ahead of the spend. | Publish and fix in the winter. Visibility built in March is what pays in July, and there is no shortcut in June. |
| Town coverage | Businesses here routinely serve eight or ten towns and have one page listing all of them. | A real page for each town you genuinely cover, with something specific in it. Four real pages beat eight thin ones. |
| Google Business Profile | Widely neglected across the Weald and the coast, which makes it the fastest available win. | Correct primary category, full service list, service area drawn honestly, twenty-plus photographs, and reviews requested after every job. |
| Connection speed | Rural East Sussex broadband and mobile coverage are patchy, and much of it is genuinely slow. | Build light. A heavy site fails hardest for exactly the local customers you most want, and speed is a ranking factor as well as a courtesy. |
For an East Sussex business choosing where to put a limited budget, local search work is usually the cheaper entry point, and it does not require replacing a site that already works. Competition for most East Sussex search terms is lighter than you would expect for a county this close to London.
What it costs
Published, and the same everywhere.
Every project is quoted in writing before anything starts. No hourly meter, no surprise invoice, and the price does not change with your postcode.
- Website build, from £995. A focused site for a business that genuinely needs one page done well.
- Multi-page build, £1,495 upwards. The usual shape for a business with several services, with the timeline agreed at quote stage.
- Larger builds, from £5,000. A shop, bookings, customer logins, or a site joined to a system we are also building. Longer timeline, quoted properly.
- Website redesign, from £1,495. An existing site rebuilt without losing the rankings it already earned.
- SEO audit and fix list, normally £495, free for a limited time. A one-off diagnosis of what is holding an existing site back.
- Local SEO, from £695 a month. Google Business Profile, town and service pages, citations and reviews, worked continuously.
- Full search programme, from £995 a month. Content, technical work, earned links and AI search visibility together.
- Systems and automation. Process audit free for a limited time (normally £495), single automations from £650, connected systems from £1,950, bespoke applications from £4,500, and CRM builds quoted after the audit.
- Brand kits from £895. Website care from £49 a month, no contract.
A third books the work, a third on the first draft, the balance before launch. Every build includes thirty days of post-launch fixes and reasonable tweaks.
East Sussex questions
Straight answers.
Do you actually work in East Sussex, or just cover it?
Based here, in the Uckfield area, so the Weald and the coast are described as they actually behave rather than as one market. Meetings in person around Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Haywards Heath and the mid-Sussex corridor are straightforward. Along the coast and out towards Rye the work usually runs on a call and a preview link, and it makes no difference at all to the result.
Is it easier to rank in East Sussex than in Brighton?
Considerably, outside the city. Brighton has an unusual density of digital firms competing for the same terms, and the web design terms there are among the hardest in the south east. Eastbourne, Hastings, Uckfield, Crowborough, Lewes and the Wealden towns are far lighter, and a well-structured site with a properly configured Google Business Profile can move inside a few months. That is a real difference, not a sales line.
We run a seasonal business on the coast. When should the work happen?
Winter, and that answer surprises people every year. Search demand for holiday lets, attractions, seasonal trades and hospitality builds two to three months before the money arrives, and rankings take a further few months to establish. Work commissioned in May for a July season is late. Work commissioned in January is on time and usually cheaper, because it is not competing with everyone else's panic.
Is East Sussex a different market from West Sussex?
Different economies, honestly. East Sussex is coastal tourism, the Wealden towns, independent retail and rural trades, with Brighton at one end skewing everything. West Sussex has Gatwick and Manor Royal driving a substantial business-to-business and logistics economy, Chichester and Arundel with a professional and marine character, and Worthing with a financial services back-office cluster. The search competition and the kind of website each needs are not the same, so a business covering both counties usually needs to treat them separately. There is more on the West Sussex side of the border.
Do you only build websites, or is there more?
Three connected things: the website, the search visibility that gets it found, and the systems behind it. In practice a Sussex client often starts with one and adds another later. The systems side covers automation, bespoke CRM builds and AI phone answering, and is set out on the automation and bespoke software pages.
