Is an AI receptionist worth it? Only for a specific kind of problem
Worth it if you are genuinely losing calls you would have won: trades on site, clinics mid-appointment, anyone whose phone rings while both hands are busy. Missed calls are money and this fixes that specific thing.
Not worth it if your callers need judgement, if the call is emotionally loaded, or if you answer nearly everything already. Setup here is £850 to £1,800, and you own the subscription.
Why people add “reddit” to this search
Because the category is full of demos that sound flawless and reviews that are hard to trust. What you want to know is whether it embarrassed anyone in front of a real customer.
Fair. It can, and the way to avoid it is being honest about which calls it should never take.
What the threads actually say

What we would tell you, with the numbers
Measure the actual problem first. Count missed calls for two weeks. If it is two a week and they call back, you have no problem worth £850. If it is fifteen and half never return, you have a large one.
Booking and routing are what it is good at. Taking a name, a number and a slot, and putting it in a calendar. That is most of the value and it does it reliably.
Handover design is the whole game. The systems that go wrong are the ones with no clean escape to a human. Decide in advance what it must never attempt.
You should own the account. Setup is a one-off job, not a subscription you rent from your supplier. If someone will not put the account in your name, ask why.
Our setup is £850 to £1,800 depending on call-flow complexity and integrations, covering product selection, design, calendar and CRM wiring, testing and a documented handover.
The short version
It is a good answer to “we keep missing calls” and a poor answer to “we should do something with AI”.
The longer write-up, with the full working, is here: What an AI receptionist costs in the UK. If you would rather see what we actually sell and what it costs, that is on the AI receptionist setup.
